Developments in the Long Island Labor Market
The number of private sector jobs on Long Island increased over the year by 16,200, or 1.4 percent, to 1,173,400 in December 2024. In comparison, the state’s over-the-year private sector growth rate was 1.3 percent and the nation’s was also 1.3 percent.
Long Island’s private sector job count decreased by 2,700 between November and December (not seasonally adjusted), compared to an average gain of 4,200. Long Island retailers added 2,300 seasonal workers in December, lower than the typical gain of 4,100. Overall during this holiday season (October-December), the retail industry hired 6,900 workers, substantially lower than the average gain of 10,800. Staffing levels in the industry are at record lows for the month of December.
Four of nine private industry sectors gained jobs in December compared to a year ago — education and health services (+10,600), leisure and hospitality (+6,700), mining, logging, and construction (+3,600), and other services (+1,100). The government sector added 3,000 jobs over-the-year.
